Sananga — a traditional Amazonian preparation

Sananga is made from the root bark of Tabernaemontana undulata, a shrub of the Amazon basin. It has a long history in Amazonian practice, where it was prepared fresh and used before a night's hunt and in moments calling for stillness and attention. Ours is made from two things only: organic sananga and distilled water. No preservatives, no additives — which is exactly why it ships cold and lives in your refrigerator.

What to expect. Sananga is intense. On application it stings and burns sharply, the eyes water and redden, and for most people that peaks within seconds and fades over the following one to five minutes. Sitting still and breathing through it is the whole practice. This sensation is what sananga is — it is not a sign that it is "working," and it is not a substitute for the medical guidance below.

How it's traditionally used: Refrigerate on arrival. Lie back with eyes closed, place one drop in the inner corner of each eye, then blink to spread it. Stay still and breathe until the sensation passes. Traditionally used no more than once or twice a day. Never touch the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid, fingers, or any surface.

• Consult a licensed eye-care professional (optometrist or ophthalmologist) before first use.
• Do not use if you wear contact lenses (remove them first), or if you have or have ever had any eye condition — including glaucoma, cataracts, dry-eye disease, eye infection, eye injury, or any eye surgery including LASIK. Do not use with prescription or medicated eye drops. Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Not for use by anyone under 18.
• Stop and seek immediate medical attention if pain, redness, swelling, discharge, light sensitivity, or any change in vision continues beyond a few minutes, worsens at any point, or returns later. Rinse the eye with clean water and go.
• Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is completely clear.
• Do not share the bottle with anyone — this is a contamination and infection risk.
• Keep refrigerated at all times. Do not use if the seal is broken, if the liquid is cloudy or discoloured, or after the discard-by date.
• For use in the eye only. Do not swallow. Keep out of reach of children.
